Je hebt kunstenaars die zich mateloos kunnen verliezen in het creëren van een eigen droomwereld. Jen Ray is zo'n kunstenaar. Als ze begint aan een tafereel - een kruising tussen een science fiction enscenering met een art deco-achtige grandeur - lijkt ze niet te kunnen stoppen in het fantaseren van beeldelementen waarmee de 'wereld'  nog meer verdicht en uitgebreid kan worden. Zo ontstaan panoramische tekeningen vol details, waarin teveel gebeurt om in één oogopslag te vangen. De protagonisten in het verhaal - moderne amazones - voeren een geheel eigen strijd, opgesloten in hun microkosmos.

(1) pressrelease tentoonstelling “Last Call” by Jen Ray 21 maart t/m 25 april 2009 at Wentrup, Berlin: Jen Ray brings her visual universe from works on paper to the realm of performance.
For the opening the gallery will present itself as an all-encompassing stage, inviting us to more fully experience the characters, architecture and ambience of debauched parties fashioned in an artists' reverie. Inspired by Kenneth Anger Serge Lutens, Grace Jones and Amanda Lear as well as Black Sabbath, Jen Ray creates an impressive ensemble of images and sounds; with the soundtrack provided by her husband, the musician and DJ Jason Forrest. 
The production culminates with the embodiment of Ray's expression, a performance by the Viennese performer Ihu Anyanwu and four additional actors. Insignia such as dressing up and masquerade, sexual transparency and transgression as well as references to the eroticism, sex, and fantasies of violence in Guy Bourdin’s fashion photography, are of particular importance.
New works on paper will be exhibited concurrently in the gallery, showing precisely the imaginative world the performance has emerged from. Amongst several smaller drawings, there will be a new large scale work on display.

(4) Jen Ray: ‘I usually think of a specific setting or prop that I can build the whole drawing around, like a red throne or a giant pile of feathers. After that the characters fall into place. However, it’s pretty organic and always changes along the way. Plus, I like to add some extra destruction and chaos at the end to stop it from being too rigid.’
