The exhibition ‘Stairway to...?’ now on display at Kunsthal KAdE led to a collaboration with FASadE to organize an evening on stairs and ladders in urban planning, landscape and architecture.
On Thursday evening, March 19, the Architecture Café will take place at the KAdECafé. Speakers are Jacqueline von Santen, senior architectural history consultant State Department of Cultural Heritage and Léon van Geest, director of the Rotterdam Roofing Days. Also studio MOTO contributes to the evening.
The superlative
Merely functional, the staircase in architecture may never have been. It is often a test of craftsmanship and sometimes a special spatial experience. Jacqueline von Santen will explain how the staircase has evolved over the years. She previously provided the introduction to the architectural film ‘Charlotte's Castle’ for FASADE.
The stairs and the city
What a staircase can mean for the city Léon van Geest knows better than anyone else. As director of the Rotterdam Roof Days, he is involved in the realization of famous city stairs to the city's rooftops. This year, The Rotterdam Roof Days will take place from Saturday, May 30 to Sunday, June 7.
Studio MOTO
The staircase is a phenomenon that also concerns artists. An inquisitive attitude typifies the work of the architects of studio MOTO. They are asked what the staircase means in their work. They designed a special staircase on the Belgian coast, a model of which can be seen at the exhibition.
Soup from Coen
To give people the opportunity to view the exhibition at Kunsthal KAdE beforehand, the evening starts early and there is also the opportunity for soup with a sandwich in between. The architecture café starts at 6 p.m. and between 5 and 6 p.m. Coen Molenveld will serve gluten-free soup with organic bread and spreads. Will you eat with us?
