Artists talk with Meta Knol

24.05.2025

An artists talk with Mella Jaarsma, Roy Villevoye and artist collective GEGERBOYO, led by moderator Meta Knol.

On Saturday, May 24, the first day of Mella Jaarsma | Roy Villevoye's new double-solo at Kunsthal KAdE and GEGERBOYO's installation at the Elleboogkerk, all the artists will engage in a conversation. Moderator of this conversation is art historian Meta Knol. The language of this activity is English.

Mella Jaarsma and Roy Villevoye have a more than 30-year body of work. Jaarsma moved to Jakarta from the Netherlands in the mid-1980s to study and then settled in Yogyakarta, where she has lived and worked ever since. As an artist, she explores cultural diversity and identity through themes such as the body and its covering and the role of food (consumption and production). Villevoye has traveled frequently to the Asmat in Papua since the early 1990s, establishing a very personal connection with the community there and reflecting on those encounters and experiences in his work. Both artists create dialogues between different cultures and challenge the viewer to look critically at how "the other" is defined and perceived.

GEGERBOYO is a collaborative project between Enka Komariah, Prihatmoko Moki, Anjali Nayenggita, Vendy Methodos (2017-2023), Dian Suci (2017-2022) and Ipeh Nur (2019-2022), founded in June 2017 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. GEGERBOYO's work is inspired by Indonesia, particularly Javanese cultural traditions, urban culture, the relationship between the two, and the connections to current socio-political phenomena.

All of the artists, in their own way, are concerned with relationships between people and borders, and together with Meta Knol, they further explore their practices, art forms and motivations.
