Have you ever heard of paradise? Paradise: a place where life is wonderful, blissful climate, beautiful surroundings and an abundance of goodies. But what does paradise really look like? And what is true paradise? Kunsthal KAdE has asked twelve artists to each fill one exhibition room with their art in the exhibition Abrasive Paradise. In it they show how they look at today's world. How is the "paradise on earth" doing: the earth is warming, there is environmental pollution, there are viruses and peoples live at odds with each other. Does paradise still exist? And what does the future of the earth look like if we continue like this? What if you could create your own paradise? What would that look like?
College 1: What did people used to think paradise looked like?
Is paradise just a fantasy world or would it actually exist? Or a little of both? During the first lecture, we will first explore in the exhibition what people used to think paradise looked like. How did they come up with these images? Then, together with philosopher Esther Didden, we will philosophize about our own paradise (on earth). Maybe you already know a very nice place and want to make it even nicer, but you may also make up a paradise entirely. The important thing is that paradise lasts a very long time. We want it to still be a paradise 1000 years from now. How do you do that? How can you create a future-proof paradise?
