Insomnia, Sleeping Beauty, Inception and Nightmare on Elm Street have something in common. They are all films in which the theme of sleep plays an important role. And these are not the only films....
Sleep appears in movies more often than you realize, but if you fall asleep at a movie, that's not good either. Sleep is part of our lives, so it is not surprising that it appears as a theme or an "act" in movies. For example, in his science fiction film Dark City, Alex Poyas puts the entirety of a city to sleep in order to change the city and identity of its inhabitants, in Awakenings, doctor Robin Williams researches a rare sleeping sickness and, on the contrary, detective Al Pacino struggles with severe insomnia in Insomnia.
Cultural historian and film teacher Constant Hoogenbosch delves into the film world of sleep using numerous examples from well-known and unknown films.
