Theatrical Lecture: The Incredible Shrinking Man

A theatrical lecture by designer and artist Arne Hendriks on The Incredible Shrinking Man, in which he explores the possibilities of creating a human being of fifty centimeters, a human being who fits better on earth.

In keeping with 150 Years of Mondrian and the central theme of imagination, Library Eemland and Kunsthal KAdE are hosting Arne Hendrinks' theatrical lecture on The Incredible Shrinking Man. Through speculative design research, Hendriks explores the possibilities and consequences of a half-meter-long man. The Incredible Shrinking Man essentially revolves around the desire to shrink. When we think of shrinkage, we think mostly of what we are giving up and have no regard for what we are gaining. But when something shrinks, it also always creates space for something else or something new. The Incredible Shrinking Man creates a mental space to think freely, where in reality this space hardly exists. Space to think about what our new paradise can be. A theatrical reading that thus fits well with the idea of a Scouring Paradise, we need less, but can and do we want this? The Incredible Shrinking Man revolves around the need to create and at the same time the desire to want less.

When: Wednesday evening, May 25, 2022
8:15 - 10 p.m.
KAdECafé, Eemplein 75

The theatrical lecture is organized in connection with the exhibition "Scouring Paradise. This exhibition starts from Mondrian's search for an 'Earthly Paradise': a modernist dream of a makeable world based on form and style, in which people strive for the true, good and beautiful from freedom. In contemporary art, the ideal of a makeable world seems to have faded into the background. In its place is reflection on the world and society. In the exhibition "Abrasive Paradise" at Kunsthal KAdE and the Elbow Church, artists analyze the current state of being and, through experience, point the viewer to the reality in which we live.

About the speaker:

Arne Hendriks is an artist, curator and undisciplined artistic researcher. Speculatively, he explores the current and future relationship between Homo sapiens and the Earth. Hendriks started The Incredible Shrinking Man in 2007 and won the Future Concepts Award in 2014. In 2022, the project will be 15 years old. In this year, the anniversary will be reinforced with a unique series of theatrical lectures by Arne Hendriks about his research, in which he shares his unique vision and knowledge about shrinkage with a wider audience. In the lecture, he expresses the dilemmas, ambiguities and challenges that shrinkage presents in a serious and disruptive way.

The Theatrical lecture The Incredible Shrinking Man is an intitiative of Johan Idema, i.c.w. Arne Hendriks, actress/director Isil Vos and Stichting Nieuwe Helden. The lecture is made possible by the Mondriaan Fonds, Fonds 21, the VriendenLoterij and the Pauwhof Fonds.
