The permanent collection of works by Armando at Museum Flehite received a huge boost last summer from a very generous donation of 80 works by the Armando Foundation to Museum Dome Amersfoort in C. The donation includes paintings, drawings, bronze sculptures and ceramic vases and covers virtually the entire oeuvre of the artist who died in 2018 at the age of 88.

To celebrate this donation, Museum Flehite, in collaboration with Kunsthal KAdE, is exhibiting a wide selection in the fall of 2024 in the Elbow Church at Langegracht 36 in Amersfoort. Artist Krijn de Koning devised a large self-contained object for the presentation. The construction consists of a dark corridor system, from which Armando's work is hung. Through eight openings the visitor can enter this system of corridors and thus walk 'behind' the Armando's. At the heart of the system is a sculpture by Krijn de Koning that illuminates the corridors from within.

Krijn de Koning has made the selection of Armando's to be shown in the Elbow Church and hereby zooms in on the more abstract component of the body of work.

Armando (1929-2018) was among the artists of the abstract zero movement in the 1960s and developed his own expressive painting style in the 1970s, at first mainly toned in black, white and red, later also with green and blue. His most famous works are the "guilty landscapes," with which he looked back on his childhood experiences during the war years in Amersfoort, based on what he had seen and experienced in the forests around Camp Amersfoort. In other works, motifs such as a flag, figure or wagon wheel take center stage, set down with violent painting movements.

Krijn de Koning (1963) has been making sculptures of an architectural nature since the 1990s. The forms suggest usability, but at their core are self-contained, abstract volumes. They are echoes of facades, corridors, walls and rooms, in which often (bright) colors are an essential, visual element. De Koning has made several site-specific structures, in which he combines the autonomous sculptural quality of his work with an applied use, such as in the Elleboogkerk, where his corridor system is a carrier of Armando's work. At the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, he similarly provided the basic structure for the hallway course of the museum's De Stijl collection.

You can visit the Elbow Church from September 12, 2024 through January 5, 2025 visits Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For this presentation we charge €4 as a uniform price. The Elleboogkerk is not among the presentation places in Amersfoort covered by the Museumkaart. The installations in the Elleboogkerk come about entirely autonomously - even if they may be an extension of a presentation in one of the museums - and must therefore also be paid for independently. More information can be found on the website of the Elbow Church.
