Central to the work of Art van Triest (b. 1983) is the human tendency to combat fundamental fear and uncertainty with order and systems. Van Triest sees ladders as one-dimensional objects that know only one direction and thus exclude other possibilities. In earlier work, he used the ladder as a symbol for truth: an absolute truth does not allow for other truths and ignores perspective. Visually, perspective actually plays an important role with ladders, as they draw the eye upward or offer another point of view. Because of their functional, almost minimalist form, ladders demand questioning: what do ascent and progress mean, and how do they relate to stability and control? The title refers to a controlled form of nature that seems purposeful and generated; again, the tendency toward control is questioned.
