With his years of experience in the (inter)national art circuit and his interest in social and political developments, the question arose for Robbert Roos (director of Kunsthal KAdE): what is it like to be a visual artist in today's America leading up to the presidential election on Nov. 3, 2020? In the summer of 2019, he took a road trip through the United States and drove from the east to west coast and back again. He spoke with 95 artists, curators and gallery owners. This travelogue provides insight into the art scene in 22 cities - known and unknown in the art world - and the motivations of socially engaged artists who live and work there.
Part of the travelogue is the record of conversations with 22 of the 40 artists in the exhibition. The book is an integral part of the exhibition This Is America | Art USA Today which will be on display at Kunsthal KAdE from September 26, 2020 to January 3, 2021. The book has 320 pages and is on sale in the KAdEShop for €16.50.
