The history of video art
There is much to tell about the history of video art. In the 1960s numerous artists experimented with this new electronic medium, and even today many artists use their - now digital - camera. They are artists with diverse backgrounds and interests, which is reflected in the diversity of their work. They point the portable video camera at themselves, to document their performances, actions and deeds, but also take to the streets to record the world around them - often with the intention of bringing about change. The video camera allows for the creation of alternative television, but equally has ties to cinema. There are also artists experimenting with the underlying technology. How do you represent electronic and digital signals? This examination of the medium itself brings with it a new, often abstract, visual language.
Sanneke Huisman, LIMA programmer, portrays this multifaceted history through video art works from then and now. LIMA is the platform for media art in the Netherlands, with an extensive collection of more than two thousand video and media art works.
